20th Academic Day for the Department of Psychiatry
When Disaster Strikes, What Will You Do?
Thinking Through Essential Psychosocial Skills for Health and Mental Health Professionals
Friday, November 20th, 2009
Mount Sinai Hospital, 18th Floor Auditorium
8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
As mental health workers few of us have had the experience of helping people impacted by an acute global or local disaster. This Academic Day is designed to help us consider what theory, skills and practice we would need to assist victims of disaster, should a wide scale city crisis occur.
Through the use of plenaries and small group workshops, international and local speakers will help translate knowledge gleaned from global catastrophes, in preparation for a future local disaster and our responses to it. The day will give participants an important chance to recognize how their usual psychosocial and psychotherapeutic work with patients and clients can be adapted to assist victims of a local disaster.
